2 Master of Orion Mods That Redefine The Game

Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars was released in mid-2016 then received its first DLC, Revenge of Antares in December 2016. 

Since the devs are no longer adding content to the game, the modding community had to step up and improve the game on their own. This is what WhatIsSol, SpudDastardly, and a few others have been doing for over a year now, allowing Master of Orion to become a much more polished and enjoyable game than it originally was. 

Let’s see what the best Master of Orion mods are and especially why you should use them in order to experience MOO as it should have been. 

The UCP fixes all kind of bugs left in the code by the developers when they stopped patching the game in 2017. From bonuses that weren’t working to bugs in ship weapons and more, it makes the game super stable and optimized as it should be. Some features were improved as well, like additional tool-tips, information about military outposts and more. 

The latest update even modifies the Biosphere building, so that it now ads + 2 max pop to a planet, just like it did in MOO II. 

The next update will make you spies' mission risk more granular, adding very low and very high risk. 
Spud Dastardly presents the biggest Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars mod in the galaxy! This mod is a massive overhaul of the gameplay experience. The list of changes it makes is far too long to list here. It's like a whole new game! It includes a total rebalance of every aspect of gameplay, new technologies, improved AI, and much more.

A few huge improvements: 
  • All races are rebalanced and their traits are distinctive and make sense. 
  • Anomalies and pirates rewards are increased. 
  • Minor civilizations are way more rewarding. 
  • Diplomacy makes a lot more sense, other leaders aren’t super thin-skinned anymore. 
  • New galaxy sizes and types. 

The Unofficial Code Patch by WhatIsSol is highly recommended for use with or without this mod! You can get it on Steam. If you are going to use UCP with 5X, it is necessary to use the 5X UCP Compatibility mod. 

Make sure you install the 5X Assets as well. 

This mod redefines and re-balances the whole game: It makes it feel right. 


With these 2 mods, you pretty much elevate Master of Orion to the level of other most praised games like Endless Space 2 or Stellaris. Strategic choices are numerous and interesting and game pace stays well balanced for most of the game. It really feels like you’re managing a space empire. 

Obviously, these mods won’t fix some of the major "missing" features that killed it for many MOO2 fans, like turn by turn tactical combat, or the absence of starlanes… But IMHO, it’s worth giving it a try. It’s a very well polished game that will give you a great 4X experience.

P.S. Another mod, the Diverse specials, and massive planets is really cool, but it doesn't work right now, as it needs an update in order to become compliant with the latest 5X major release. Hopefully it'll be updated soon...
